The Alinco DR-138 radio rig is a professional mobile communication device designed for field coordination, operational vehicles, security posts, projects, logistics, and various radio-based communication activities.
The Alinco DR-138 offers three selectable transmission power levels to suit different communication needs. The VHF version provides output levels of 60 watts, 25 watts, and 10 watts. Meanwhile, the UHF DR-438 version offers 45 watts, 25 watts, and 10 watts.
The ability to select the power level allows users to adjust the radio’s performance according to field conditions. High power can be used when a wider communication range is required with proper antenna installation, while low power is suitable for local-area communication and can help reduce power consumption.
This radio rig also features 200 memory channels for storing frequently used frequencies. This feature allows teams to switch channels conveniently without having to enter the frequency manually each time.
The Alinco DR-138 is available in the VHF DR-138HE and DR-138HT variants, as well as the UHF DR-438HE variant. The DR-138HE model has a TX/RX frequency range of 144.000–145.9975 MHz. Meanwhile, the DR-138HT has a TX range of 144.000–147.9975 MHz and an RX range of 136.000–173.9975 MHz.
For the UHF series, the DR-438HE supports a TX/RX frequency range of 430.000–439.9975 MHz. This radio uses 16K0F3E FM and 11K0F3E FM Narrow modulation.
The available channel spacing options include 2.5 kHz, 5 kHz, 6.25 kHz, 8.33 kHz, 10 kHz, 12.5 kHz, 15 kHz, 20 kHz, 25 kHz, 30 kHz, and up to 50 kHz. The Alinco DR-138 has a 50-ohm unbalanced antenna impedance and frequency stability of ±2.5 ppm.
This radio rig operates on a 13.8 V DC ±15% power supply with a negative ground. Current consumption during high-power transmission is approximately 12 A, while maximum receive current consumption is approximately 0.6 A and approximately 0.4 A when the squelch is active.
With dimensions of approximately 145 × 47 × 190 mm and a weight of approximately 1.2 kg, the Alinco DR-138 can be easily installed in vehicles or used as a communication device at a security post or base station. The device can operate at temperatures ranging from -20°C to +60°C.
On the transmitter side, the Alinco DR-138 uses a Variable Reactance Frequency Modulation system. The DR-138 provides output levels of 60 W, 25 W, and 10 W, while the DR-438 offers output levels of 45 W, 25 W, and 10 W.
The radio has spurious emissions of less than -60 dB and a maximum frequency deviation of ±5 kHz in FM mode and ±2.5 kHz in NFM mode. These specifications support stable voice communication for operational requirements.
For reception, the Alinco DR-138 uses a direct-conversion system. Its sensitivity at -12 dB SINAD reaches 0.25 μV for the VHF version, while the UHF series offers sensitivity of 0.35 μV or better.
The available squelch systems include Carrier, CTCSS, DCS, 5Tone, 2Tone, and DTMF. These features help minimize interference from unwanted signals and keep team communications more focused.
